New research found that age related mental decline is partly due to damages to the blood-brain barrier, which is kept intact with the help of a protein called KLF4. KLF4 is produced by so-called endothelial cells, which lose their ability to produce KLF4 with increasing age. The insight may offer a pathway to treat the condition.
