Molecular switch and Alzheimer's

alzheimer.jpg

Studying the brains of dead older adults it has been found that around 20 to 30 percent of them have had asymptomatic Alzheimer's disease with a buildup of misfolded amyloid-beta and tau proteins, but with no prior signs of cognitive decline. In experiments with mice, it has been discovered that the buildup on its own is not sufficient for cognitive decline, but also a molecular switch needs to be flipped. More research is needed to find a potential new treatment against the disease.

Aeroplanes should ideally be evacuated in at most 90 seconds in an emergency on the ground. This is hard to achieve with a considerable number of elderly persons on board. However, new research found that distributing elderly people near exits can considerably speed up the evacuation time (141 vs 218 seconds).
